Bick's Driving School explains driver safety and remedial driving courses in today's blog.

What Is Driver Safety?

For remedial driving courses, we define driver safety as operating your own vehicle in a safe manner regardless of the driving conditions you face. We teach you how to drive on crowded city streets and busy highways. We also delve into rainy conditions, snow, bad roads, and drivers who aren't paying attention. You can only control how you drive and how you react to other drivers or pedestrians. Bick's Driving School wants you to be prepared for anything.

Speed

Speed is one major factor in driver safety when it comes to remedial driving courses. We teach you how to maintain a safe speed, sometimes below the speed limit, in all types of conditions. You may have to slow down for rush hour traffic, adverse weather, or pedestrians crossing the street. Our driving instructors teach you to be alert for all possible scenarios you may face where you have to reduce your vehicle's speed for safety.

Adverse Weather

If you've lived in Ohio for any amount of time, you know the weather can change in an instant. Remedial driving courses at Bick's Driving School show you how to drive in adverse weather. There are two tricky parts to adverse weather. One is slick pavement, and the other is your sightlines. When rain starts to come down, that's the most dangerous time for slick pavement. Slick roads make it hard to stop because oil and water form a very slippery layer on the pavement until more rain washes the residue away. Heavy rain or snow can make it difficult to see out of your windows and windshield, even with great wipers. The key here is to slow down when it starts to rain and snow.

Driving Distance

Driving distance is a crucial factor in car accidents, and it's one thing we teach as part of remedial driving courses at Bick's Driving School. The general rule of thumb is to leave at least two seconds of time between you and the driver in front of you. At slower speeds, two seconds is a shorter distance. You can time this by counting "One apple, two apple" as the car in front of you passes an object on the side of the road, such as a tree or street corner, and then your vehicle passes the same object.
